if you don't mind a cozy mystery, then go for it !

My first 5/5 book this year
Jujur jujuran dulu, aku udah sering banget dengar rekomendasi karyanya Keigo-sensei.
Aku suka banget sama alurnya.
What a good point.(~‾▿‾)~
A slow-paced meandering mystery novel about a cop who gets deep results by avoiding shortcuts in his investigations. Set in an old-fashioned Tokyo neighborhood with small stores and neighbors who know each other far beyond what one might expect.

Surprisingly wholesome. The book was less about the murder and more about the community it touched and how civil servants could and should do more than the bare minimum.

A well-written police procedural detective story, skilfully evoking its place and community in the setting of a traditional area in Tokyo.
The novel is made up of a number of episodes in which the MC detective calmly teases out the murder mystery by clarifying time, place and interpersonal relationships. The MC’s actions show him as being both astute and compassionate. There are quite a few characters, but I didn’t find myself overwhelmed because of the way in which the MC focuses on one situation at a time, gaining an understanding of relationships and personalities.
The plot may strike some readers as being a bit meandering, but I felt that gave it a more realistic feeling of a mystery gradually being untangled, occasionally after investigating leads that turned out to be irrelevant for its solution – though even then still revealing more about the place and community.
A small weakness in this edition is the copy editing – the layout of dialogue occasionally confused me as to who was speaking and also some obvious errors occur (e.g., “there someone was behind him” [Chapter 1, Section 5], “that’s not the how police investigations work” [Chapter 2, Section 5]) – and some of the English figures of speech in the translation didn’t quite jell with the context.
All the same, overall a great read with excellent characterisation.

This is my first Keigo Higashino novel, and I wonder if I might have liked it more had I read earlier stories involving the detective, Kyochiro Kaga, who has recently been demoted to the Nihonbashi precinct. The reason for the demotion is hinted at very late in the novel, Kaga clearly has a richly storied past, but not knowing any of it --- I think --- put me at a disadvantage here.
Divorcee, Mineko Mitsui, has been discovered murdered in her apartment and Kaga --- not unlike Columbo with his sly-seemingly-off-the-cuff, no worries questioning --- works his way through the neighborhood, observing and noticing details and inconsistencies invisible to others, his powers of observation and intuitive assumptions akin to Sherlock Holmes, too.
The story builds and layers and deepens as Kaga digs into backgrounds and hints in what amount to short-story-esque vignettes centered in different business in the district; a cracker shop, restaurant, china shop, clock shop, pastry shop, translator's friendship, cleaning company, handicraft shop, and an accounting firm.
Lots of characters (with a helpful cast list at the beginning of the novel) to keep straight, and an outcome I'm not sure was possible to determine from the information we're given --- but maybe I'm just not attentive enough to have dug it out. It moves quickly, and Kaga is quite likeable --- what we get of him from this edition --- like I said, maybe if I'd read the earlier books in the series and gotten to know him, I'd have enjoyed it more.
Note, there are a number of awkward sentences, words missing, two versions of one sentence with part of one and part of another left --- as in, editing and translation issues. Not a lot, but enough to be annoying.

Love the way, Detective Kaga tries to find out about little bits and pieces to bring it together and solve the crime. And he has been very patient and nice to the people that are kind of involve as suspects to find out and cross out one by one until he finds out the murderer. If you don't really like anything gory and love crime investigation this will be a good book to read. This is the 2nd book of the series and you can also check out the 1st book.
