I love second chance romances, but I’m not quite sure how to articulate my feelings about this story. It was good. I didn’t finish it feeling happy or sappy, just glad to have made it to the end.

Julie’s aversion to being vulnerable was not revealed until close to the end. And yet it plays a huge role in this story. Because the reader is left in the dark, I just felt a bit confused and frustrated by her behavior.

There is a bit of time jumping in this story. I didn’t find it entirely necessary.

Aidan is a starchy hero who is the honorable, cinnamon roll type of guy.

Also, this story takes place in the early 1900’s. I kept forgetting that until the heroine would be driving her car. I am so used to reading early and mid 19th century books, that this fact kept startling me.

Desperate to get free of her husband, she staged an “affair” with an honorable man. The two end up together despite her deceit/troubled past and his morals. It was pretty meh, honestly.

Liked the early 1900s setting. A lot more emotionally meaty than the usual historical romance fare. There were a few emotional inconsistencies with the characters but nothing major. A strong showing for historical romance. 3.5 stars. I will read more book by this author.

Laura lee guhrke writes the kind of historical romance novels that I want to read.
This one was a pleasant one, even id not a remarkable one. I preferred the first half to the second one.
Mistreated free spirited divorcee in forced proximity (the two of them seek eachother, she agrees to help him find a wife) with the man who compromised her (it was under her machinations). There is animosity between the two of them but even more attraction.

Usually I despise flashbacks but here they were very cute (and few)

Writing this (and rating it) to save my future self from giving it another chance. I already had this in my queue because I could swear I've read and enjoyed this author before so pulled two books at once...I tried, despite the last book I read of hers (uh, finished yesterday) being a two star for me. This one is falling into the same category, unfortunately, of being somewhat compelling but overall just not for me.

Loved this! Great heroine, great hero, great tension. And it made me cry at the end. This is why Guhrke is an auto-buy for me.
