Ally Nickerson has always had issues with reading, writing, and spelling...and even though she excels at art and math, her teachers don't think she is smart. But with the help of her new 6th grade teacher, Mr. Daniels, Ally discovers she has dyslexia and learns how to overcome it. Throughout the year, Ally grows in other ways, too: she gains confidence, embraces her different way of thinking, forms some rue friendships, learns it's okay to ask for help, and becomes class president.
An inspiring tale about a child with a learning difference. A good choice for book club (grades 4-6).

Teacher goals. This book made me cry several times.
The story was told more through glimpses of time rather than day to day - this was jarring at first but in the end I really liked it.
It was hopeful but maybe more hallmark than realistic — yet holds a good message for students and teachers alike.

Three cheers for Allie!!
This was so good and the audio was fabulous! This would be a perfect read aloud for upper elementary and middle school.

As a teacher, I did enjoy the hopeful part of this story. It shows that a teacher can make a difference in the lives of their students. I did like Albert in the book (he was probably one of my favorites). At times, I felt that some of the teachers were unreasonable in the book and that some of the kids were too mean. Ally also made some pretty poor choices that I felt she got little/to no correction. (ei. running out of a classroom or building). However, this was a good read and reminder that sometimes things are not always what they seem. It does stress the importance to be diligent in identifying those who try to fly under the radar and give them the help they need.

Inspiring story about Ally and her struggle to find her place in school as she grapples with dyslexia. Filled with hop, friendship, and perseverance - a great one to share with students!
