Middle-grade
Realistic Fiction / contemporary
Fish In A Tree by Lynda Mullany Hunt is a middle grade realistic fiction novel about a girl named Ally who has trouble reading and writing. Thankfully, she ends up with the right teacher to help her realize her potential.
This is a beautiful story about a child who struggles with a learning disability and has a positive, growth mindset message. It’s a must-read for teachers, parents, and students alike!

This is one of those books I wish was way longer than it is. I was so sad when I finished it! As a teacher, I loved how this story was told from the student’s perspective and how she was feeling as “the dumb kid” instead of what I’ve more often read told from the “hero teacher” perspective. I truly think every teacher should read this book to get a better insight into what some of our students may be facing in their minds!

My ten-year-old and I read this together. Although it did feel a little in your face at times with the lessons we are supposed to learn, I think it's a great book for the age it's aimed at. My son really liked it a lot, even though before we started he said it wasn't his type of book.

These characters are so life-like and believable I felt like I was in their class at school. Dynamics of these personalities and talents all come out right with this great teacher. I wish every student had a teacher like him.

This is one book that inspired me to pursue education. Teachers have the power to completely reverse the course of a student's career.
