Such a heartwarming children’s novel! I teared up several times for Ally’s educational struggles. As a future teacher, I think it’s very worthwhile and effective to broaden your perspective.

Why measure a fish’s IQ on how good it climbs a tree?
So it is with people.

This book did such a good job of showing dyslexia and learning differences, and how we need to appreciate the differences in all of us. It was a rough week, though, for the teacher me to read this.

A heartwarming story of a student's struggle to learn to read and the teacher who helps her overcome those challenges, Fish in a Tree is a must read for anyone entering the field of education.
I recently read this book for one of my education classes, and really enjoyed it. As a YA novel, it is a heartwarming story about never giving up in the face of adversity, while also being true to yourself. However, I felt that it really shines from a teachers perspective, where we are also given an excellent example of how we can reach our students through the relationships we build with them and understanding who they are on an individual level.

This is the sort of heartwarming "loser" overcomes the odds to prove everyone wrong story I don't normally care for. And yet, 5 stars. Because good characters are flawed and things aren't wrapped up in a completely neat bow by the end. By and large, the students felt authentic and the dialog flowed naturally. There weren't many easy answers and cheap outs. Story beats weren't over-mined for cheap sentimentality. Well done, Ms. Hunt.
