I bought this book back in 2015 and god, this would be my favorite book if I read it back then. I still really love the storyline and I’d give this book a higher rating if it weren’t for the writing. It’s just that this book was written for 14 to 16-year-olds & I’m almost 20 (; But I really love the storyline and can’t wait to read the next book!

I borrowed this book from the libarary, and I am so glad I did. This book was amazing, and I loved the idea and thought it was unlike anyting I have ever read or heard. The mystery builds up in the book, and there is one part at the end and this is what I thought: OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD (times, like 1,000) I can't wait until ENDERS.

I had heard a lot of good things about Starters, so of course, I had to find out for myself! And let me tell you, the praises everyone are singing are completely true! This book was awesome! The story takes place after this nuclear war has killed off everyone between twenty and sixty. So the only people left are Elders (those over sixty) and their grandchildren and Starters (the young unclaimed minors). The main character is Callie and she is a Starter. She has no living relatives except her younger brother, Tyler, who is sick. Callie, Tyler, and their friend Michael live on the streets. They need money to get water, food, a home, and medical assistance for Tyler. It is illegal for minors to work, therefore Callie ends up going to this place called Prime Destinations where she will get paid to rent her body. This means that an Elder will be able to "take over" her body for a few days in order to relive the days of being a teenager. Callie agrees to do it for Tyler's sake. But things don't go exactly as planned..... This is when the adventure really starts! New friends and enemies were made and there was romance blooming. Lissa Price completely shocked me there at the end and I have some new suspicions that will hopefully be revealed in the sequel (which I am definitely looking forward to). Overall, I thought Starters was a fantastic read that I totally recommend! <3

An ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley.

This book got thrown across the room so many times from pure schock and irrriatation and it was beautiful! I didn't even see the twist coming, it was so amazing. I suggest to anyone who needs a good book to make you frustrated!!

Let me start off by saying this is one of the most brilliant YA debuts I have read in a while. I absolutely adored this novel. It has everything I want in a dystopian read: fast paced, originality, great characters, lots of action, and lots of feelings because of said characters. The world Price weaved was scary. Like a lot of dystopians you’re left with a sense of foreboding. This world, or something like it, could actually happen in the future. Near or far, it’s hard to tell, but it’s a possibility. The world of Starters is especially unnerving because it seems so realistic, so like something that could happen down the road. A world gone mad because of war, a country cut off, half it’s population dead. You’re either really old (an Ender) or a minor (a Starter) and if you’re a Starter with no living relative, you’re doomed to live in the streets or in prison like Institutions. Scary, right?

Then there’s Prime Destinations: a company where the unclaimed minors can go to rent out their bodies to wealthy Enders. Yep. They rent out their bodies. They take over for however long they pay for. They walk around as a teenager while their real body is safe at PD’s headquarters. The book opens with Callie walking in. She needs money to take care of her sick brother and if she rented out her body to Prime, she would have more than enough for a house and food for a year for them. But she’s reluctant at first. She’s weary of the contract, of everything but in the end she has no other choice.

But then Callie wakes up… the rental is not over. She wakes up in the middle of a nightclub and is able to communicate with the renter. That’s when the ball gets rolling. That was when I thought wow this book is going to be hard to put down.

I’ve read a few reviews that have said some of the characters don’t have chemistry. I don’t see that. I think there are things to develop and flesh out more with certain characters but it’s a series. What about Michael, for example, but I’m sure things will be developed further in book two. I also hope we learn more of Callie’s backstory in book two. I don’t think we got too much of it. There was some, and enough to kind of tide me over, but I really want to know more.

All in all, Starters was fantastic. However, the massive cliffhanger made me want to claw my face off because I’m not sure how I’m going to wait for the second instalment.

JSBSHAJSNBSK SO GOOD

This built up nicely. The beginning felt predictable, though well constructed, but as Callie's adventure (too pleasant a word, but alas) continued, I kept finding myself impressed by how efficient and firm she was with her reactions to each new twist, and how she worked alone AND with as many friends as possible, depending on the situation (read: no unnecessary lone-wolfing here just for the sake of excitement for the reader).

I'm excited to see where the second half of the duology goes!

4.5/5 sterren. Tof en spannend verhaal wat totaal onvoorspelbaar is. Heerlijk eerste deel van een geniaal tweeluik! Lees hier mijn recensie:

This book was so different. Callie was so lovable and relatable. I just want to read the next book right now

Actual rating: 2.5 stars. Decent book, but nothing really great. I liked the pacing, the book flew by and I barely put it down. I never felt much for the characters and there wasn't much of a connection. And oh, all the insta-love!! It wasn't just the love though. All the relationships seemed instant to me. The premise for this book was interesting and creative, but the execution was just... no.
