This book is quite possibly everything wrong with YA.
1) First off, it borrows heavily, to say the least, from a late noughts television program which no one watched (Dollhouse)
2) However, it chastens it, makes it boring-- these borrowed bodies aren't for banging the gardner, natch
3) An ill-defined plot/world-building (if I hadn't read the author lived in Southern California, I would be convinced she'd never been to Southern California and she just picked Beverly Hills because people would know where it is and it would do the work for her. It is that bad)
4) Completely unrealistic side characters. She has a brother who is 7 and sounds like he's an adult. There is absolutely no characterization.
5) The absolute hype machine. Goodreads reviews of sample chapters? Say what now?
6) Super problematic terminology and othering of anyone over the age of 25 and anyone who isn't a white American
I received this from Netgalley in an exchange for a review. And I complained about Cinder. I KNOW.

OMG.

Cute, definitely for your younger reader.
And not a lot of chemistry going on to be honest...
Cool concept though

I got through this book a lot quicker than I thought I would. Starters is a true page-turner. You of course want to know the whole time what exactly Prime Destinations plans are and what Callie will do about becoming entangled with them. But more than that, there are tons of smaller plot points from chapter to chapter that keep you on the edge of your seat to see what happens next. I would have read the book all at one time if I could have.
I was always coming up my own predictions as to what would happen involving several of the different threads, and was delightedly shocked by the end as each thread came to its conclusion- there were so many twists I had never thought of! These twists are definitely one of my favorite parts about Starters.
I love the POV we get from Callie because it places us in the same boat as her, trying to connect all the pieces and separate out what is truth and who to trust. I also like how throughout the book you can see Callie's journey of trying to figure out what her identity is post spore wars. She knows she is changed and she becomes more and more so throughout the novel, but as she rents out her body, shares her head with her renter, and is placed in an unique position to be the one who could potentially unravel Prime Destinations, she faces constant challenges to her identity.
Starters has become one of my favorite books and it's set up for its sequel, Enders, has me still on the edge of my seat and ready to read more.

Let me start off by saying this is one of the most brilliant YA debuts I have read in a while. I absolutely adored this novel. It has everything I want in a dystopian read: fast paced, originality, great characters, lots of action, and lots of feelings because of said characters. The world Price weaved was scary. Like a lot of dystopians you’re left with a sense of foreboding. This world, or something like it, could actually happen in the future. Near or far, it’s hard to tell, but it’s a possibility. The world of Starters is especially unnerving because it seems so realistic, so like something that could happen down the road. A world gone mad because of war, a country cut off, half it’s population dead. You’re either really old (an Ender) or a minor (a Starter) and if you’re a Starter with no living relative, you’re doomed to live in the streets or in prison like Institutions. Scary, right?
Then there’s Prime Destinations: a company where the unclaimed minors can go to rent out their bodies to wealthy Enders. Yep. They rent out their bodies. They take over for however long they pay for. They walk around as a teenager while their real body is safe at PD’s headquarters. The book opens with Callie walking in. She needs money to take care of her sick brother and if she rented out her body to Prime, she would have more than enough for a house and food for a year for them. But she’s reluctant at first. She’s weary of the contract, of everything but in the end she has no other choice.
But then Callie wakes up… the rental is not over. She wakes up in the middle of a nightclub and is able to communicate with the renter. That’s when the ball gets rolling. That was when I thought wow this book is going to be hard to put down.
I’ve read a few reviews that have said some of the characters don’t have chemistry. I don’t see that. I think there are things to develop and flesh out more with certain characters but it’s a series. What about Michael, for example, but I’m sure things will be developed further in book two. I also hope we learn more of Callie’s backstory in book two. I don’t think we got too much of it. There was some, and enough to kind of tide me over, but I really want to know more.
All in all, Starters was fantastic. However, the massive cliffhanger made me want to claw my face off because I’m not sure how I’m going to wait for the second instalment.

I really enjoyed this book. The concept was wicked, I was constantly tensed up waiting for what would come next, the writing was realistic and brought me straight into the world she wrote. It was creepy, SPOILER the plot twist with Blake was crazy yet amazing END OF SPOILER and I was hooked.
Definite 5 stars, you must check it out if you are anything like me and you love dystopian or sci-fi books! Just wow.
