Ward does it again for me. I truly think she cannot miss for my style and tastes. This one hits in the meta and magic feels like Needless hit in the mental health and crime; Eve hit in the gothic and cult. There’s a thrill in reading a tale of ghosts and hauntings requiring you to flip back and reread parts once new info is revealed that I always revel in.

And I love a twisted character that on the surface seems a monster but when you peel back the layers you see the soft pink inside and let out a little “ohhhh” and understand. Maybe not condone. But understand. Aren’t we all a little bit monstrous?

I was curious but confused by all the different timelines for a while, but the last fourth of the book was mind bending. I enjoyed that bit a bunch but wish I connected with at least one of the characters more.

I really liked this book for about the first 3/4 but by the end I was “twisted” out. It’s not that there’s a magic number for plot twists, I just stopped caring about the characters after so many rug pulls. It’s very well written though, and I liked many of the creative choices even if I found them predictable.

also, I didn’t love the reveal that Sky had been a girl all along because it shifted the reality of Wilder’s bisexuality. With that twist, the only boy he’d had feelings for turned out to be his half-brother (not that he knew). But still, something about that feels like queer baiting and I didn’t like it.

This may be the most annoying book I’ve ever read.

Boring
