Told from a split perspective, we meet Annika, the princess of the nation Kadier, and Lennox, a leader in an army looking to reclaim Kadier for his people. These two are obviously set against each other, and through twists and turns the reader learns even more ways these two are destined to be against one another. But of course, this a romance, so even with everything against them, these two find each other intriguing.
I’ve stuck with Keira Cass because I unashamedly love The Selection Series trilogy. I have no problem admitting that I’ve been disappointed by everything else she’s put out. But I keep trying her new work, hoping for that magic again. Is this one on par with The Selection? No, it isn’t. But this is the first one that was good. I wish that the pacing for part one of the story was more intentional, but this was a solid book, and I’m even more hopeful for whatever Cass does next.

3.5 stars, rounded up. I think this book would be a solid 4 stars if I read it myself instead of listening to the audiobook. I had a free borrow on audible and the text copy was not available through my library, so I couldn’t read along like I normally do. The narrators brought my rating down for sure. The male narrator made Lennox’s voice sound higher and whinier than I imagined Lennox’s should be. The female narrator actually did a better job of Lennox’s voice than the male! And the third female narrator who voiced the 3rd person perspective was pretty awful. Very robotic and nasal.
Now the story. It was good. Not great, not amazing, but good. I wasn’t too invested until about 3/4 of the way through when I realized I was almost done with it and I didn’t want it to end. The were two pretty surprising twists that added to the depth of the story and the ending was satisfying. The battle scene towards the end was fun, seeing all the characters mixed up and choosing sides.
A few pretty graphic violent scenes or remembrances. I think I will let my mature 12 year old read this, but only after I warn her of a few things.

A new kiera cass book always makes me happy. Can you predict how it will end from the start? Yes. Is there some sort of insta-love/enemies to lovers, too quickly to forgive? Also yes.
Do I love all of that? Heck yeah

I was entertained by it in the same way one is entertained by the random crime show that plays at random on the tv.
