More like 1.5 stars…ugh I was hoping for the Selection 2.0 and what I got was a terrible train wreck of a YA novel grrrr
3.5 stars. Definitely better than the last couple Kiera Cass books, but I felt like it was lacking in some ways. I'm not sure why I don't think any of her books live up to the magic of The Selection series, but that's just how I feel. Maybe I'm just too old for this type of book? But I felt like the world-building/plot was a bit underdeveloped and the romance wasn't as natural as I would have liked. The characters were decent. This book was long, but also felt too long. It wasn't the worst and wasn't the best.

Continuing on a little nostalgic journey I've been on recently, I read Kiera Cass's latest release.
A Thousand Heartbeats is not a profound read, nor a particularly good one, but it was entertaining and managed to retain my interest.
This book would be a good pick for someone who, like me, enjoyed reading Cass's work in the past and wants to revisit her work.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me an E-ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I LOVED this book. Kiera Cass has a way of writing that is stunning. I loved the plotline in this book as well as the tropes included such as enemies to lovers, forbidden love, stolen land etc.
I do think the pacing in part 2 was the most odd. But I still enjoyed it overall. Part 3 had the most action which I appreciated and I did feel myself caring about the characters.
I would 100% recommend this to others and am excited to read more of what Kiera writes!

Normal pacing? We don’t know her.
Consistent characterization? Don’t know her either.
The “plot twists”? I knew those actually they were easy to guess.

One would think a lot more would have happened in a 561 page book. Was it good? Sure. Did it drag on longer than it should've? Definitely.
Romance: rushed and a tad unrealistic.
Violence: lots of people dying/being run through with swords.
Characterization: sometimes very predictable but pretty well-rounded.
Friendship, love, sacrifice, enemies-to-lovers trope, it all equates to a clean story that is refreshing if not somewhat slow.

KIERA CASS YOUVE NEVER LET ME DOWN AND I MEAN THAT
Now that I've had a day or so to ponder over this book I can confidently conclude that I think this book deserves 6 stars. It's exactly what I needed to read to be honest. It's an enemies to lovers where the girl knows how to wield a sword and the guy cries when his pet fox dies. It was just like exactly what I expected from a 600 page book written by Kiera and I wouldn't ask for anything more. This book had me kicking my feet and giggling and it's the first book in a while where all my annotations were about quotes I liked and not quotes that made me want to d!e. HE WAS THE BOY WITH THE APPLE AND SHE WAS THE GIRL ON THE HORSE!!! IDK I CRIED!!!!!! And I knowwwwwwww that epilogues, where they get married and have kids, are cliche and not very forward and modern but gosh darn it they make me happy!!!!!!!!! this book is the equivalent of a 95 minute trashy romcom with a few good quotes and a male love interest that made me swoonnnn. It was written like it was made in the 90s and kiera definitely thought she was making a statement with the quote "Lennox insisted that they teach their children about her games, about how to hunt and gather the most painted rocks around the palace. Annika insisted upon teaching them his dances, about lacing together hands and spinning until they were dizzy" like oh wowowowowo reversing the gender roles how quaint but I don't Care. Loved this book and I would read it again in a heartbeat.
reread: OKAY FINE IT WASNT WORTH FIVE STARS BUT IT WAS STILL A REALLY GOOD BOOK GOSH.
