Odd Child Out

3.5 stars. This wasn’t the thriller I was expecting but I enjoyed it. The dynamics of an immigrant Somali family in the UK and an injured (soon dead) white boy were fascinating to read. However, I think this dynamic needed more depth and nuance. The rapidly switching point of views also overwhelmed me at times.

GIlly Macmillan has created a story with a twist about two sons, two best friends and two very different families living in her home town of Bristol.
Macmillan write “Every day as I sat down to write Odd Child Out, I thought about how crucial the quality of empathy is when writing fiction. Treating your characters with respect and humanity is essential .... I hope I’ve done them and my other characters justice.” This reader says yes.... and I enjoyed every moment!

You know what it's like when you're at the library with a toddler and you're trying to pick a book for yourself but you also need to hurry up so you don't fully focus on what you are picking? This is what happened to me. Anyway, I am so glad it did because this exceeded my expectations, a lot. It was a lot deeper and complex than I expected. It tackles various societal issues, the characters are interesting and multi-faceted and I am pretty sure I'll look out for her other books.

3 1/2 stars. Not as good as the first.

This book covers so many topics it’s like stories within a story. Immigration, cancer, rape, abuse, relationships. Idk if I’d call it suspense but definitely drama.

I won this book through the Goodreads giveaway. I feel like this book was missing an identity. There are parts of this book that read like a YA novel and others that are trying to be an adult thriller. Overall it seems to lean more to the YA side. The story line itself tries to make more of itself than what it is. As it progresses, more and more is explained, but the solutions are easy while trying to seem more interesting than they are. The feel/intent of this book and the story itself don't seem to line up. If you are looking for an easy read, this may be for you.

I am usually really picky when it comes to this genre of book, but I really truly enjoyed this book and the first book in the series. The ending was way more suspenseful then I had anticipated.
