This was a really good psychological mystery. It was really two different mysteries - what really happened to Noah Sadler and who was the man Abdi was searching for. I did feel like I would have benefited from reading the previous book - What She Knew - the book referenced things that happened to Clemo and his previous case. It is also clearly setting up the mystery for the next book as well and I look forward to reading more by Gilly Macmillan. I received an ARC of this book from LibraryThing.
Meh. I was interested enough to read it while it was in front of me, and I definitely felt compelled in the midst of it. But not particularly memorable or insightful. The reveal at the end about what was in Noah's backpack wasn't really as much of a twist as I was kind of looking for. A good beach read.
This wasn’t a BAD book, and it definitely surprised me several times. That said, while I wanted to know what happened, I wasn’t rushing to finish the story. I really loved What She Knew, and this just wasn’t close to that for me. I’ll still continue with the series though if more are released!

The characters never developed. I found Emma to only be out for herself. Fiona was judgmental. And the others just lacked any morals. Very boring. DNF
Privileged Noah and his best friend, Somali refugee Abdi, sneak out at night — and Noah ends up in a coma. Abdi isn't speaking now, so no one knows what happened. Did Abdi push him in the canal, or was it an accident? Detective Clemo is on the case, determined to prove himself, but his ex-girlfriend Emma Zhang is now a journalist and she's sticking her nose in, riling everything up.
I will say that the characters were engaging and unpredictable, but the plot really just fizzled by the middle for me.
Spoiler
Noah dies so now it's a potential murder case; Abdi learns his mother was raped in a refugee camp and searches for his biological father, who's a dangerous criminal; actually it turns out Noah committed suicide and had filled his bag with weights before going into the canal because he wanted to die instead of suffering from his terminal cancerI will say that the characters were engaging and unpredictable, but the plot really just fizzled by the middle for me.
I am impressed. This book is not perfect but it is compelling. Also I wish Abdi's narrative could have been featured more often.
