I received this book from Goodreads Giveaway program.
Overall this was a good read. Characters were well developed, storyline is good. The only problem I had was the book felt juvenile, the words used felt like it was simplied.

I'm really liking these DI Clemo books. Though it's not a sequel to "What She Knew" I would highly suggest reading it first because there's a lot of mention to DI Clemo's past the the Ben Finch case and his relationship to Emma Zhang and other things that take place in "What She Knew", although it could be a standalone book because the author does give sufficient information to understand how his past relates to what's happening in "Odd Child Out". I liked this book better because it didn't feel slow to start and the overall pace of the book was quicker and I think the short chapters helped with that.
It was just ok. Some big reveals felt too telegraphed for me to care. Some of the subplots, like DI Clemo's sister, may pay off in the longer series, but in this book as a standalone, I really didn't care. One storyline I did find particularly touching was the point of view of Noah, the boy at the center of the case. The way Macmillan handled the telling of his perspective alone was strong enough to make me increase my rating by an entire star. I'm not sure I'll seek out the 3rd story in this series - I picked this one up kind of at random before realizing I had already read the first book in the series.
This book made me cry. There were places it dragged but the love story between two friends was beautiful and the racial issues felt honest but of course unsettling.
4.5 stars, but definitely worth rounding up.
Really quite good. The ending left me in tears. Very nuanced characters and stories. Definitely recommended.

I like the main character in her books, DI Clemo. In finding out the truth in a boys death, this book deals with discrimination and being excluded as young men. This is more literary fiction than mystery, but an enjoyable book.
tense
medium-paced
I really enjoyed this book...got me thinking a great deal about racism, friendships, and communication. I didn't realize it was part of a series so it certainly can be read independently. Didn't see the end coming, which was a nice surprise.
Suspenseful enough but not too scary! A quick summer read.
