I cannot BELIEVE this book didn’t have a wait at the library. It’s one of my new favorites. Adeline, the main character, is SO compelling and fun to follow, the setting (homesteading in the Montana plains) is so challenging, and the way the author weaves in the stories of other citizens of the town of Big Sandy is so effective and pulled on my heartstrings so much. The mystery drove me nuts and I couldn’t put the book down. And there’s A CREATURE

I’ve read 3 by this author this year. I love the lyricism he writes with. I love the love of books that he weaves into all of his stories. This is one of the most “complete” that I have read from him. Well crafted, dark fairy tale(?).

Lone Women was the April book for my virtual bookclub with the theme western. And of the westerns I have read I have normally enjoyed them so I was pretty excited for this one. And I did love it up until it fell apart for me haha. I enjoyed Adelaide and her story and the mystery surrounding the trunk. I 100% thought we were going in a different direction and I honestly would have preferred that. I didn’t get too much horror out of it, killing to survive isn’t really horror to me it survival. I liked the linemen aspect and how they came together. I really appreciated the sapphic romance (it was one of my favourite parts to be honest). Where it lost me was the magical realism part, I just cannot get with it especially if it isn’t really sold as that and then it happens, I feel like it makes something happen to the story and it always falls short after that. I was missing more of how it happened and came about and I want more of Elizabeth’s side of the story. I think it was a mixed basket for this read with the rest of the club too some loved it and some DNF’d it.
I think I’d probably still recommend it to certain readers.
