Our book club pick for April. One of the great things of being part of a book club is the opportunity to explore genres you never would on your own. This was my first time reading a Western. I was pleasantly impressed when I started this book, it’s not just a Western- there are some thriller and horror aspects to the story, which kept me intrigued for the first half of the book. After that, unfortunately, it felt like the story took a wrong turn and I quickly lost interest.
The novel is set in 1915 Montana and follows Adelaide Henry, a young Black woman fleeing California with a heavy trunk and an even heavier secret. Right from the beginning, the atmosphere is unsettling. We know that the trunk definitely contains something terrifying. The author keeps building tension and you will find yourself quickly flipping through the pages. In order to keep this review spoil-free, this is about all I can tell you.
If you enjoy reading westerns with slow paced suspense, you might like this better than I did.

When I started this I was reading to figure out what was going to happen. Then it became a where is this going. It was a good read not really what I was expecting it to be but I enjoyed it nonetheless
