you know what? hell yeah.

I loved the writing and characters in this story, all except for what's in the trunk! haha The author was doing a guest speaking at the college in Missoula, Montana and came across a book about women who settled on claims alone and worked the land. He felt there was a story there and it was a good one! I loved the ending of this too. The fantastical part of the story is not my normal read but I still enjoyed it very much!

This was a diverse Western story with an edge of mystery and monsters. Very short chapters kept me interested!

LaValle is a singular talent, in that I honestly can't think of anyone else who could produce his trademark brew of horror, crime, and minutely detailed social commentary, and this may be his masterpiece to date. From the first chapter to the last, he throws more curveballs than Satchel Paige in a story that reads like a twisted Black rewrite of one of the later Little House on the Prairie books with ALLLLL the brakes taken off and the dread coming at you as inexorably as a steam engine across the plains.

I liked the main character and her group of women friends, but by the end I felt the book had too many characters and disparate storylines.  While they eventually all came together, it just felt overstuffed by the last quarter. Same with the pacing, the story moved along at a compelling clip, until the last 25% when everything snowballed, a chaos of characters and plot. I did find the writing and structure to be top-notch throughout. I also enjoyed the fantastical elements and the mystery surrounding the slow reveal. I prefer historical fiction about obscure moments and didn’t realize that’s what this was until I read the acknowledgements. All in all it was a satisfying reading experience, and I would read more by this author.
