This one is worth the read. My goal this year was to read more women written books, more indigenous authors and this one hits both marks.
The story is post apocalyptic, or sixth world as the Indigenous mythos writes it. I love that this book addresses climate change , women's issues, abusive relationships, and indigenous issues.
The climate change and 'walls' inject a reality that is so real. I saw a review that said this is like Mad Max but native. And I agree. But the reality that climate issues and walls created more monsters and dangers was significant and a theme that is relevant to current affairs.
Characters were real and there needs to be a warning for those healing from abusive relarionships. But Maggie is brilliant and her arc of healing and self actualization is important. I am looking forward to further character growth in book two. Rebecca Roanhorse has found some real catharsis in a hard stories.
Some of the other characters are very predictable but that does not negate the twists and turns on the story or the importance of books like this.
The action and story were tightly written and paced. This book kept me awake to finish the book until almost 3am. Not many books will accomplish that for me anymore.

I'm glad it exists but i almost dnf'd it like 5 times. It's clunky, it's plot dumpy, and almost nothing _happens_. Our protagonist is full up to the brim on trauma, and only at the end of the novel begins to maybe reckon with it. You think you're going monster hunting, but it's mostly just Mags being incredibly unobservant and poking herself in her trauma sores. It's saved by the world building, even if at times, the landscape vs means of transportation just doesn't make any logistical sense.

This book was an engaging and fast paced read from start to finish, and had me hooked in a way only YA fantasy has done before. The characters are compelling and complex and the relationship build up between the two mc’s is delightable. I especially loved Maggie and being able to read a complex and emotionally tough and stand offish main character without that making her less worthy of love or powerful. Learning about Navajo mythology and culture in a dystopian / futuristic america was fascinating, and there was many themes that reflect upon today’s social issues. I found it balanced jokes or references to the past without getting lost in it. There was definitely some pacing issues with the story overall, the ending was slightly rushed and the antagonist characters motivations were left slightly underdeveloped, making the stakes of the ending underwhelming. The growth of the MC and relationship development also felt slightly rushed, but I was also totally committed and rooting for them so I didn’t mind this as much, and can tell that book 2 is going to challenge this as well. If this book centred white characters and author it is likely that it would be far more popular than it is, and so I can forgive these slight issues as it was such a joy to engage with a perspective that I never have before and see a Native American woman as the main character of a sci-fi dystopia that is coloured by Navajo mythology. And there’s superpowers! That is my favourite. Overall, I am so excited to jump into book 2 and hope that the world and characters are developed further!

While I am a lover of dystopian books, I don’t think this is one I would have picked up had it not been for the BookTube SFF Awards. This is one of the nominees for the debut novel category and I’m interested to see which book wins.
Part of me is still a little unsure about my feelings for this book. I think I want to like it more than I did. It was a fun and fast paced book but there’s just a few things that I don’t know that I liked.
The characters were interesting enough but I honestly don’t feel like they were developed enough. I don’t feel like I know them like I want to. We get their back stories and they ‘why’ of what they are doing but I feel like somethings missing. I just don’t feel all that invested in them except for maybe the main character a little. I think my feelings with the main character is more that I want her to get her revenge.
The best thing about this story was the world building. Roanhorse has created an incredible interesting and unique world. I was fascinated by the mythology and all of the different Native American inspired tidbits. I loved everything about it. But again, I don’t feel like I got enough. I want to know more. I’m sure we will get more in the second book, but I want it now.
Overall, I liked this book but I wanted more from it. There isn’t anything specific I would say I didn’t like. I just feel like it could have been longer with more character development and more world building. I think I will be continuing the series to see what happens next.
