Incredible. Amazing. Thought-provoking. Best book I've read this year.

Tore through this book in a day. Riveting. The content was obviously quite disturbing but I found myself laughing at the emails exchanged, especially at the end. I also love when authors challenge structural conventions so the "fictionalised history book/anthropological study" with illustrations and outside correspondence and all was perfect.

This really made me rethink about how much structural patriarchy there is today and how much injustice there is in the world that is being allowed. This book is very dark and very thought provoking. There is a lot of violence. I feel the message is worth pushing through the challenging/disturbing bits.

The best way to describe The Power is an alternate history dystopian. In a world where women control the world, things actually aren’t any better than when men control it.

This book was eye opening, sad, and gruesome. Kinda like a car accident. You know you should stop watching but you just can’t help yourself.

The Power is truly a must read book. It was pretty slow for me to get through but I still enjoyed every chapter of it.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
TW: sexual abuse, war, death

This book had a really cool idea that I thought was quite unique. Essentially flipping gender roles entirely. And I think it executed that goal very well. Really cool world building, and I didn’t mind changing POVs often since it just deepened my immersion into the world and showed more perspectives and reactions to the incoming change of status quo. However, the was a continuous build up— they literally started each chapter by saying “X years until it happens…” getting closer and closer to this big event. However, it wasn’t really explained what even happened. It was glossed over generally in about 1 page. Overall still a cool book, and similar to the Handmaids tale, I really liked the ending of analyzing the events of the book as a text to be examined. Overall it was still a good book!!!

This book gets 5 stars from me because of the amount of “holy shit” moments it has—in a good way. I love the way that power is explored as it relates to patriarchy, sexual violence, and a host of other dynamics.

It’s also very dark and violent, so—be warned.

My biggest disappointment is that there is absolutely no discussion, exploration, or even a nod to queer folks, especially queer women, in this novel. For all that Alderman does to capture a variety of perspectives and responses to a worldwide phenomenon, the absence of wlw seems like a big oversight.

The idea behind this novel is just astounding.  The novel just rips along and pulled me with it.  but  - I had a lot of reservations with it, one of which is that it is very cis gendered, and it actually felt dated.

and the ending, the back and forth between ?academics? it just made me laugh as it was so clumsily done.

Well, this will certainly give you food for thought. It was all sorts of fucked up and terrifying. It will live in my mind forever.
