all in all a great book, and a better overview than history lessons could provide. nevertheless, i feel like the conclusion is a bit laggy, too radical and negatively one-dimensional.

I bought this book in the airport in Frankfurt because I needed something to read. It felt appropriate to get a book on German history, and this seemed like a good refresher piece.

It is very short and high-level. At many points, I found myself thinking this read like an AP class refresher before an exam. This aspect of it was great and I did not dock any stars because it is supposed to be a short history.

James Hawe essentially argues that East and West Germany have always been divided. Since Caesar began his campaigns till the river Elbe, Germany has had a clear divide between these regions. However, some of the biographies and assessments seemed one-sided. I came into this knowing more about modern Germany history, so I cannot speak to any bias that may exist in earlier history, but I noticed it later on in his text.

At the end of the day, this would be a great starter book if you are learning more about German history (or if you have an AP test), but I would not let this be the only read.

Very informative, nice easy read. Helpful maps and diagrams throughout the book. Great introduction to German history!

Yeah....this one's a miss. I get what Hawes is trying to do, but geographical location as the justification for every event in German history just seems a bit far fetched for my liking. Especially when there's literally no references to any source materials to back up your argument.

This book is interesting (although clearly extremely biased) and does provide quite a definitive overview of German history from its beginnings. Either take it with a pinch of salt or another German history book, however, or your understanding is going to be very one-sided.
