One of the earliest locked room mysteries. Vibes of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie’s And then there were none and the Murder of Roger Ackroyd. The clues were right there in front of me and I missed lots of them so great reveal and the best type of mysteries are the ones that your spellbound until the end. Will definitely read more of Gaston Leroux books.

Fans of Arthur Conan Doyle will enjoy this. A young man who is a genius at solving crime and his best friend, a lawyer, travel to a French village to solve an attack on a young woman sleeping in a locked bedroom.
I've been curious about this book for so long. It's written by the guy who wrote the Phantom of the Opera. One of the first locked door mysteries, etc. So I'm glad I finally got around to reading it. It's odd in that not only is it an older book and an older book that got translated into English, but it's an older book that has the tropes before they became well worn tropes. Which is always something to remember.
I enjoyed the story though. The characters were a bit odd and the solution was as well. But it didn't seem an impossible solution or a cop out.
