I wanted to give this title a try since I remember liking Fahrenheit 451 back in high school, but Bradbury's attempt at horror was horrifying in a completely different way than i expected. The first story about a man with dwarfism was gross and ableist; the only shocking thing about the twist was how stupid it was. I hoped the next story would be better but the only horror in that was how white people find different cultures (in this case Mexican burial practices) strange and "barbaric" while they take pictures of dead bodies and that left a sour taste in my mouth. I'm returning this to library immediately, I'm glad I didn't spend money on it. YIKES.

The books was bought and had to be started in October, but was finished in November which is appropriately an even more creepy month.

brain not built for this one, wasn't for me, just too dated.

I can’t totally explain it but this didn’t work for me. Maybe it’s because there was no connective tissue between the stories. Maybe it’s because I’m not into Bradbury’s attempts at horror. Maybe it’s that the stories felt sort of juvenile in comparison to the deeper themes of his other work. For whatever reason, I just couldn’t find any stories that truly resonated or stuck with me, which is odd for Bradbury. The writing is good as always but the stories were just sort of meh.

Boring and dated content that feels too shallow for what it is trying to accomplish. Also I don't like Ray Bradbury's writing style.

a collection of short stories, perfect for the month it’s named for.

personal favorites include: the Skeleton, the Lake, the Emissary, the Crowd, the Scythe, Uncle Einar, Homecoming, and The Wonderful Death of Dudley Stone.

note: some stories include ableist language and racist caricatures, as would be common at the time the stories were written; read at your own discretion.

I read this for book club and unfortunately hated it 😭

I think I just read too much horror that it makes the more classic horror hard to appreciate because it just seems so boring and not scary. I enjoyed The Scythe, There Was an Old Woman, and Uncle Einar but thought all the others were painfully dull. Not for me.
