A great and remarkably even short story collection! A few standouts, for sure (The Lake, The Emissary, The Scythe, Skeleton, The Next in Line), but really quite good across the board. Perfect for Halloween season. 🎃

Bradbury knocks it out of the park again. Here we have a collection of short stories from the late 40's and 50's, many still quite relevant today, or at the least hold up in the modern world.

We have here a mix of twlight-zone type stories where there's an ambiguous twist at the end, the genuinely tragic, and just odd.

I cried reading The Lake. Bradbury has a knack for telegraphing exactly what's going to happen, but the emotional impact is lessened no one bit.

I darkly chuckled at The Next in Line, The Skeleton, and The Small Assassin.

I dreaded The Wind, and The Emissary.

A good collection of stories, perfect for Halloween.

Overall, the stories were interesting to an extent. While I get that they're as short as they are by design, at the same time, I felt like because they were so short, there was a lot of stuff that got glossed over because it was meant to up the "mystery/horror" but it didn't always play out right. I did feel like most of the stories were trying to come for more of psychological angle and wanted to make you think rather than being more of the jump scare type horror. There were a few stories that definitely had the horror bent to it but a lot of them felt like they ended abruptly just because.

A few of the stories I would have actually liked if they were longer to be able to further explore things. Several of them would be interesting if they were turned into some sort of TV/DVD something a la Creepshow
