The first half or so of this book I thought was good but not as in depth as works with similar guidance I've read from Curt Thompson and Dallas Willard. But the second half is really rich with practical advice and, for me, successful in presenting a compelling vision of a balanced and vibrant life.

This is a good and helpful book. I think that we, as Christians, need to make Sabbath and healthy care of ourselves. This, taken inappropriately, could lead to too much self interest. But that is not the intent of the author. What kept me from five stars is that he spent a lot of time encouraging healthy behavior, but not enough describing what he did and alternatives. That is what I would like to see more of for it to be a great book for me.
Picked this up on the recommendation of John Mark Comer. I found it comparable to (though lacking the specificity of) Changes That Heal in terms of bridging emotional health and spirituality. While the first part of the book unpacks the reasoning behind EHS, I found the last chapter - the Rule of Life - to be the most helpful in considering how EHS comes to life. Whether we realize it or not, our conscious or unconscious Rule of Life shapes our relationships with self/others/God. While the first part of the book was necessary for laying the groundwork, I wish the final chapter had either been integrated earlier in the book or expanded. It left me wanting more, but maybe that's not a bad thing. I'll just need to look for it in another place.
Overall rather disappointing. I was hoping to find discussion of emotional health that was rooted more thoroughly in Scripture rather than monastic tradition and contemplative spirituality. Some of the pieces of the author's autobiographical narrative were interesting, but they were strangely distributed throughout the book, more deposited than woven into the text, and I kept feeling like I was missing chunks of the story. For me, the most helpful chapters were 1, 3, and 7.
I FEEL AS IF I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH, AND TRULY GROWN MORE MATURE JUST THROUGH READING THIS BOOK!
IF YOU FOLLOW JESUS, AND DESIRE TO LOOK MORE AND MORE LIKE HIM EVERYDAY, THAN READ THIS BOOK.

Soo good! Highly recommend everyone to read this! There's just so much more I could say about this book.
I confess I didn't read the whole thing. I got half way through and didn't need to go further. What he writes about combining emotional health with contemplative practices is by no means new and his theology is bad. Henri Nowen is a much better source.
