Re-read this again as I want through it again with a group this fall. Such incredible content. When applied can truly be revolutionary. I only give 4 stars because a lot of the analogies/fictional stories can be a little cheesy. The cringe factor can make it at times easy to miss the wealth of knowledge. Srry Pete

"Know yourself so you may know God" excuse me, what? Absolutely not. There were so many red flags before this (including telling me that I'm "entitled" to exist??) but that clinched it. The author does have some decent points (although they're all things that felt aimed toward an older generation, I'm used to seeing the exact unhealthy opposite of his points in culture myself), but combined with his meaningless word salad way of writing, and his unbiblical teachings sprinkled across every page, I couldn't in good faith keep trying to read it.
This is the first time I've seen the subtle creep of New Thought and the way it influences the Christian culture, but I'm so grateful that I had the words to apply to why this is so harmful before I started this book.

Still so good! Really helpful to read through it again and dig deeper by doing a book study and connecting and studying Scripture to each chapter! I appreciated the chapters over the Rhythms of the Daily Office and Sabbath and Grow into an Emotionally Healthy Adult the most.

5 ⭐️ Lots of helpful perspectives on learning how to journey with Christ! The author included many very practical tools, and it was encouraging to see some therapy theories sprinkled throughout the book!
Read as part of a church-wide series. This was okay, not great, in my opinion. Personally, I thought [b:Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life|944267|Boundaries When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life|Henry Cloud|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1348423991s/944267.jpg|55483783] was better at explaining some of this content, and was more practical in application. My biggest issue with this book was that it didn't go far enough in its applicability. A lot of personal anecdotes, a lot of monasticism and text from religious figures throughout history, a little scripture (but not nearly enough to make his points sound). Some chapters were all over the place. I did really enjoy the sections on Sabbath, and though that was well explained, and am going to attempt to put some of those ideas into practice.
Our church also used the Day by Day Daily Office study and a workbook; I only had the Day by Day, which was also okay. I kind of stopped about four and a half weeks in when I realized I wasn't getting a lot out of it (because I've already dealt with some of this stuff, re: Boundaries). I do wonder if the workbook would have helped bridge the gap between theory and practicality.
Chapters:
The Problem of Emotionally Unhealthy Spirituality
Know Yourself That You May Know God
Going Back in Order to Go Forward
Journey Through the Wall
Enlarge Your Soul Through Grief and Loss
Discover the Rhythms of the Daily Office and Sabbath
Grow into an Emotionally Mature Adult
Go the Next Step to Develop a "Rule of Life"

i think i’m not putting 4 bc a lot of what was said i’ve heard before so it didn’t feel bombastically new however all good reminders
main takeaways
- is so important to FEEL ur emotions and walk THROUGH not around the struggle (i pray more ppl do this even tho it hard- let’s not emotionally damage others!)
- reminder of sabbath was much needed esp as i have started work and am scared of burnout
- bruh being emotionally mature and living life in this manner takes WORK but it’s what God wants us to do
- live life out of love ♥️
i realize there are many many ways that i can grow in emotional maturity so this book was good to call me out on certain ways i can work on meself
