I loved it. A lot. It was good. NO matter what people say, I think this series is awesome. Especially the farther you get into it, the story gets very interesting.
It starts kinda slow, but when the pace is really set, the story is fascinating. It's set in the Gold Rush to California period, and with a girl who can sense gold.... you get where it goes.
I think this series might be a bit underestimated because it really has a good grasp of the time period and the characters are well made and fascinating.
In the beginning, I had indeed thought it would be a bit boring, but after a few chapters...I couldn't put it down.
I'd still recommend it for more invested readers, but definitely read it, people! You may find yourself in for a surprise.

Also, the title and cover are beautiful! I mean, look at them! So, so gorgeous!

This was a really nice book to read. I loved the little bit of magic in it and the historical setting it took place in.

I liked this book and some of the characters. I do not like Uncle Hiram he is obviously a jerk wad. Leah I hope can put the past behind her in the next book. I liked the story though. I have not read many YA books about the gold rush days. And I will be reading on because I do want to continue.

I was craving a western-type story after watching a new mini-series on Netflix, so I decided to pick up this book from Book Outlet. Wow, I am so happy I did. I loved everything about this book from the larger-than-life characters to the crisp setting and meaty plot. I totally dug the added fantasy element too--Leah's gold-seeking powers were so cool! I ate up this story and didn't stop reading until well past midnight. I recommend, I recommend, I recommend! Even though it's pretty late already, I'm thinking I HAVE to start book two. I mean, how can I not?!

While I'm not usually a fan of historical fiction, I really liked this book and plan to read the second and third in the trilogy.

This book was SO GOOD!!! I loved the strength of the lead character, Leah (or Lee). She captured my heart right from the get go, making tough decisions and thinking them through without having an exhausting inner monologue that can sometimes bog books down. This book was well written. I loved the historical accuracy of the book (despite it’s one fantastical twist). The author didn’t pull her punches, she gets downright graphic about the hardships faced in this book. I’m a huge history buff, so I absolutely devoured all the little details about daily life for this character. Leah’s power is one that I haven’t come by in fantasy fiction before; I liked how the author describes her 6th sense and it’s role in her character arc and decision making. The other characters in this book were fleshed out well and the resolution was definitely hinting at more conflict to come. I can’t wait to pick up the next book!

Walk on Earth a Stranger depicts a strong female character in an era when that was frowned upon. Lee, forced to disguise herself as a man, runs away from her new guardian and joins up with many others on the quest for gold in California. She meets many great characters along the way, each with unique and lively personalities.

I felt Carson did a great job portraying the issues of the 1840s. The way women were treated as inferior and incompetent; slavery and the split between Northern and Southern states; the treatment and views on Indians; all were handle with finesse and rang true of the times.

I was unsure how the mix between Western, historical fiction, and fantasy would play out, but in the end I loved it.
