This book has an interesting blend of genres. The fantasy isn't very prominent in the story, at least not in the traditional sense. The only fantastical element is Lee's ability to sense gold. I think it blended well with the setting of Gold Rush-era America. Good use of setting!
The plot wasn't action-packed. Instead it was more of a journey-based story, detailing the trials Lee went through to get to California. I liked the exploration of the journey to the West and how difficult it was so long ago. The U.S. is a lot bigger when you don't have cars or airplanes to get where you're going.
I liked Lee! She's a very strong woman trying to find her way in a world that blocks women from really finding their potential. I like the side characters too, but I feel like there wasn't much to them. We see a lot of slivers of development, but I don't yet feel like they are fully-fleshed characters. I wasn't particular invested when people died.
Still, I like the story and am interested in the rest of the series!

I didn't like this book and didn't finish. A surprise, since I adored Carson's debut trilogy. Simply did not connect to the story.
Good story, well told. A little anachronistic. People go on a journey. People become who they are. If there was a little deeper level, I missed it.
Love this book! So glad that I gave it a try. It was worth it. Can't wait for the next book to come out. It is so good!!!

Where the Crawdads Sing meets Spin the Dawn (to me at least). I quickly fell in love with the main character and so many of the other characters. Several really great connections/relationships and emotional moments. I really like the series so far.
I am so happy i finally got to this book. i had been wanting to read it for so long. this was a different type of historical fiction than i usually read it i loved reading it. it’s set during the california gold rush and follows our main character, leah, who has a “power” where she can sense where gold is. under someone’s fingernail, in the ground, big and small. when gold is discovered in california, she wants to ravel there because she believes she can be herself there. this book is all about her traveling to california and her troubles along the way. boy was this book sad. i didn’t cry but i felt saddened a lot when reading parts of this book. jefferson is such a sweet boy and cannot wait to read more about him and his relationship with leah. leah was a great main character and connected with her very fast. the decisions she makes are smart and while some seem to have bad outcomes, she never stops and is determined in what she does. overall, really enjoyed this book and cannot wait to continue with the trilogy
