One of the best YA historical fiction novels I've ever read! Rae Carson put so much information and detail into this story and I whole heartedly appreciated it. I felt like I was experiencing traveling west with the main character. I loved the pacing of this book and how unrushed the storyline and character development was. I can't wait to read the next one. This first novel set such a great foundation for what I hope is an amazing series!

Wow. I don't think I've ever read a book like this. Maybe I just don't read enough westerns? I don't know. But this was like a historical western fantasy novel and I loved it.

Basically, take the old computer game Oregon Trail and turn it into a book. Then add in murder, a girl who must disguise herself as a boy, and a magical ability to sense the location of gold.

I mean, it's kind of awesome.

On top if that, the characters are well developed and have such great growth, the plot is fantastic, and the writing is phenomenal. I don't think I've ever binge read a series before, but I am starting the second book immediately.

Leah Westfall has two amazing parents that care about her deeply. That all changes suddenly when she returns home to find her parents murdered. Not knowing who did it, she decides to leave all that she knows to follow her best friend Jefferson to California, where gold has just been discovered. Leah can sense where gold is, so California is the perfect place for her. The trip will be a treacherous one, but she knows it's necessary.

As usual, Rae Carson did not disappoint! Like her A Girl of Fire and Thorns series, this book is a slow burn. But burn it does! I fell in love with these characters and Carson did not hesitate to rip my heart out with a few fatalities. I am sooooo looking forward to the next book!

This was really good! Reminded me of fun times playing Oregon Trail as a kid. I knew all the stops they would make, lol.

The story was good. I really liked the idea of Leah setting out on her own. She was brave and resourceful. The characters in the wagon train were an interesting assortment of people from all different backgrounds.

I would say this is mostly historical fiction with a slightly magical twist to it.

I would have preferred a little more mystery to the story, especially regarding the identity of the murderer (which I personally think was revealed much too quickly) but overall this was quite good. I can't wait to see where this series goes next!

The main character's powers were completely incidental to the plot here. Didn't realise there were more books in the series until I put the book down going 'you could take out the gold sensing and the plot wouldn't change at all.' Unsure if I care enough to move onto the second and third where the powers presumably have more of an impact.
