I haven’t read a sci-fi in so long, and I don’t really have much bad stuff to say about this book. Mostly just that I wish that the romance had been more of a slow build up. But it is missing that piece of it that makes it five stars. 4⭐️

Slightly new genre from one of my favorite YA fantasy writers... going from fantasy to sci fi doesn't seem like a big stretch here. The science feels solid - space travel and talk of actual years vs earth years - with "crinkling" and the Q-net (think quantum internet) which enables deep space travel and throw in millions of Terra Cotta Warriors and looters and mysterious aliens... I enjoyed it. Looking forward to book 2!

I was originally drawn to this book because i'm a fan of Maria V Snyder's Poison books and I was quite surprised to see her delving into science fiction. So i was a little wary because of that but I overall I think the book was pretty interesting.
Pros:
-Great main character. Lyra is likable and relatable
-Unique concepts (to me), space travel and crinkling was cool
- Good balance of romance and science fiction stuff. There wasn't too much and it was a natural progression
-some cool female characters

Cons:
-Predicatable plot twist
-The evil character lacked depth and motivation in my opinion
-not enough world building/ i just wanted more explanation here. A lot seemed to be glossed over. Like, how does this group of people new to a planet find food? Do they grow it? Did they just bring a huge supply with them? I wanted more information on the working parts of planet life
-The story was slow at times and it took a while for the story to really get going
-The most climactic part of the book was way too short

Despite the cons list being a little longer, I really did enjoy the book and i'm interested to see where she takes the plot in the sequel. I think the concept of the story is interesting but I think she could have made the book more interesting by steering away from so much analytical talk about the warrior planets.

This was a bit more YA than I was expecting. I liked the basic story of the Warriors and the world that was developed.

The bad thing about starting a new series as soon as it comes out, is waiting for the rest, because this book was sooooooooooooooooo good!! It did have romance (bleh) but it wasn't too typical and was a slow thing rather than an inst-thing, thankfully!!

The story was great, the characters were great. Everything was great. Loved it, want more!! Want more now.

Solid YA sci fi!

YA SF that has a lot of promise. The premise is interesting: Chinese terra cotta warriors are found all over the galaxy, and Lyra’s parents both study them, dragging her from planet to planet and wreaking havoc on her social life because of the time dilation their moves cause. When the last planet they were on goes totally silent and then looters terrorize the planet they’re currently on, Lyra gets involved in figuring out the mystery of the warriors.

⁣ I loved that Lyra was outspoken, insanely intelligent and has a beautiful relationship with her parents ( dunno this was just really refreshing for a 17 year old protagonist). This book was in first person and Lyra talked directly to the reader, something that I sometimes don’t overly enjoy but in this case found very entertaining. The book is centred on Lyra and her parents hunting down Terracotta warriors on planets across the universe. I do love Chinese history so I’m really excited to see where this aspect of the plot takes us in book two and three, I want more terracotta warriors! Of course we have a love interest and it’s funny/ interesting to watch that unfold. The book was all action forward the end and didn’t disappoint. I’m really excited to read book two this month, just in time for book three to be realised in early December! ⁣⁣
