Non

I feel like an insane person walking up to people in my life and saying "Hey, have you heard of a little book called Wurthering Heights? One of the best books of all time" knowing that this book has been in English literature canon since its initial publication. But, good God. This truly is one of the best books of all time.
Each character has such capacity for good and evil, no one is likable and everyone is lovable. The passion in every relationship (familial and otherwise) is perverse and addictive. Especially in such an apathetic world as we are in now, Heathcliff's desperate pleas for Catherine to haunt him until his dying breath is heart wrenchingly romantic.
Something that surprised me after rereading this book for the first time since it was assigned to me in high school, is how much I grew fond of Catherine. Even in her most spiteful, mean and horrible attitudes I found her so human and fallible. Her death monologue about returning to her childhood bedroom has haunted me for two weeks now.
I also noticed that Nelly Dean's perspective is so warped by bias that each awful moment orchestrated by Heathcliff or how Cathy acted had me thinking of the truth of the events, and how we can never know the truth because of how each character is filtered through another's' perception.
Ah, the cycle of abuse and love and how one is not so different from the other. Beautiful..

What a horrible description of human cruelty. There is nothing loving about this story. It's all violence, manipulation, and cruelty.
