Can you believe I loved The Favorites so much it inspired me to pick up my first piece of classic literature in IDK how many years? The angst was so good I had to go straight to the source. This book isn’t what I expected- for as much as it’s embedded in culture, I had no idea the turn the book takes halfway through. I did struggle with some of the narrative device (Mr. Lockwood you don’t need to exist) but the spark between Heathcliffe and Cathy is so damn strong. The book actually kind of took my breath away when they’re declaring their love for each other. Some really beautiful writing! the second half of the book focusing on the next generation kind of lost me (hence the extended time between when I started and finished) but the ending does come together in a beautiful way. It does examine the pain of inter generational trauma in a real raw way.

3-3.5… so toxic, so much brooding!! was just obsessed with a WH retelling so finally got around to reading the original and it’s INSANE-genuinely just so floored by the fact it was written in 1847 I can’t imagine the scandal it caused lol

This probably shouldn’t have been the first Brontë novel I read. And it’s not my usual reading fair. And I was sick, so I read it very quickly. I did not enjoy it. The cruelty was oppressive—which I think was the point. My biggest takeaway was that I am so very thankful to have been born when I was!

read a PDF version so it was very quick :)

I put off reading this book for a long time, because I thought it would be a difficult read: on the contrary, I didn't find it difficult at all. I just couldn't put it down. I was engaged from the very beginning, and I enjoyed the complicated and imperfect nature of all the characters. Emily Brontë writes beautifully as well, many of the descriptions and rambling narratives I found captivating. This is definitely one of the best books I've ever read.
