Continuing the story. Red and white roses explained herein. Also, Joan of Arc.

funfact: i was about to start reading the last act when i got the message that i don’t need pt 1 and 2 for my Shakespeare class but 2 and 3. That was fun.

I read this during the last two weeks of 2024, but forgot to note it on Goodreads. Second time that I've read it. I've lowered the personal rating from four to three stars. There's some beautiful writing, but it's sluggish at times. The biggest problem for me was the number of characters; I tried counting them, but this is impossible given the number of unspecified porters, guards, soldiers and suchlike. I did an Internet search and found that Henry VI Part I is only almost the most character-heavy of Shakespeare's plays. Henry VI Part II evidently has more. The Wars of the Roses involved many people, of course, but I don't think the play really needed to provide a role for every English noble living at the time of the story. Overpopulation tends to dull the progress of the plot and make things unnecessarily difficult to follow.

Quite good but you can tell this is early Shakespeare by the thinly developed characters. This one also really plays to the audience. You can almost hear them boo when one of the villains speak.

Henry VI is one of Shakepeare’s more forgotten history plays, but it holds up as one of his more interesting. The language isn’t as pretty as his superior work is, but the story is wide ranging, but narrowed in focus. There is little here that feels out of place, and after reading Richard II, Henry IV, Henry V, Henry VI moves the story right along smoothly. I particularly liked the depiction of Talbot and his tragic death a moving scene. I was a bit perplexed at Shakespeare’s portrayal of Joan of Arc as she starts off traditional, before devolving into a demon conjuring seductress. Joan was an odd aspect to an otherwise stellar drama.

Rent handlingsmessig har Shakespeare her (og i de neste tre stykkene) dramatisert det historiske bakteppet til the War of the Roses + noe av the Hundred Year's War.

Henry V1 parts one, two and three.
Not that I want to be negative but I really didn’t like the Henry V1 plays. This is purely a personal reaction and I know some people like these.
I am not sure why my history education was so lacking that I had to spend a considerable amount of time researching the period (the Wars of the Roses) before picking up the plays.. once I had though, I was quite up for reading these.
But oh my goodness
