another good Jack Reacher book. The only bad thing i can say about this book is one that is true of all the JR books. The beginnings and endings are always great. The middle parts are always jacked up with way too much detail and not enough action.

The beginning was pretty good and it kept me reading but I didn't like the end and I don't think I will look for more from this series.

I'd damn it with faint praise, but *shrugs* I enjoyed it. We'll just pretend common sense isn't a thing.

Favourite Reacher of the series so far.

Classic Reacher. Laugh out loud script. Quick page turner. Predictable, in a totally enjoyable way.

I have never read Lee Child before and really enjoyed this book. I have purchased The Affair by this author as well. Hope it is as good as this one

For the most part, fine. Standard David Baldacci-type stuff. Ex-cop ex-special forces man who is tall and also good at observing stuff does cool shit and objectifies many women along the way. People die. Millions of dollars are involved. Standard.

Trigger warning for sexual assault in the next part

Where this book really stands out to me (in a bad way) is the what I would consider gratuitous sexual violence. Normal violence is again, standard for these books, although I’m not sure if it’s Lee Child or just this book in particular that really leaned into it. I had to skip a couple pages of torture.

It always comes down to the misogyny in these books and yet I keep reading them anyway. In this case, besides the rampant but standard “women are either thin and young and beautiful (fuckable) or fat and old and ugly (not fuckable)” sort of deal, I tremendously disliked the violence (threatened) against them, particularly the eight year old. I get that it’s an easy way to make the villain the villain, to have the reader understand the depths of his depravity or whatever, but it just felt like a cheap shot. Like the female characters were really only there so that they could be threatened with horrific (unnecessarily sexual, very specific) violence. There wasn’t any need for it. The villain could have threatened to cut off their heads or whatever—any number of non-sexual horrors that always befall men in these books. It was profoundly disturbing, which is why I’m writing this review and not sleeping even though I have class in 5 hours.
Anyway, standard detective thriller stuff, points off for taking the cheap shot. Didn’t make me hate the villain more, just made me hate the author. Gross. Way to take the easy way.

They rode down in the elevator. In the ground floor lobby a small dark woman in a long black coat swept past surrounded by tall men in suits, like staff or assistants or bodyguards.
"Was that Yoko?" Reacher said.
