So interesting. Gives insight into life as well as depression.
I am a licensed clinical social worker and this book sparked my thinking about how I see and discuss depression and anxiety. Although I always discussed it being larger than biological, this book offered specifics that were thought-provoking and inspired me to discuss depression as a response to our need for communal relationships. Again, things I knew, conceptually, but it was amazing how the author put it into words.

I don't know why more people are talking about this book.
Johann you stud you. I’ve never really understood depression, let’s get the clear. After reading this, I realize that those feelings I couldn’t quite explain could have been depression, even if minor. But the problem isn’t with me. It’s with our society and that is where change needs to come from.
Interesting book identifying societal causes of depression (disconnection from nature, disconnection from other people, disconnection from meaningful work + traumatic experience & financial insecurity). This was the second book (the first being "Natural Causes") I've read recently that mentioned studies (or maybe it's the same study?) showing that LSD helps people feel that they are a part of something bigger and so lessening their anxieties.
My preference would have been for more time spent on large-scale studies (which are mentioned briefly and casually), and less on individuals' stories, but they did help make this a quick read.

Seems like I forgot to review this when I put this book where it belongs; in the trash.
So here's my review: what utter and complete garbage. That's it.

Maybe it’s because I’ve done my fair share of research on this topic, but this didn’t book did not provide me with any new information on the topic. I also wasn’t expecting that Hari would relate the 9 sources of depression he describes to himself as much as he did. Maybe it was just my expectations that were off - I expected a book with a more detailed and scientific reasoning behind the sources Hari talks about and I got a very general overview and a personal narrative, but this wasn’t my favourite read of the year.
I still do recommend it if you want an introduction into the more sociological and psychological perspective on depression and anxiety - but if you’re already more literate on this topic, this one will bring nothing new for you.
