A must read for anyone who has suffered from depression or anxiety or knows someone who has. In other words, everyone should read this book. We are more disconnected than ever, but we can change that. I found this book to be insightful, informative and encouraging. Bravo!
It wasn't quite the book I was expecting to read. I gained some new insights but I was not captivated by the writing. The author made use of a lot of citations which is nice but it felt outdated using experiments and ideas from long ago, maybe there isn't any newer things to draw from. Since the citations were a bit outdated it made me question the reliability.
one of those books that makes you go "damn that makes a lot of sense"
Maybe it’s because I’ve done my fair share of research on this topic, but this didn’t book did not provide me with any new information on the topic. I also wasn’t expecting that Hari would relate the 9 sources of depression he describes to himself as much as he did. Maybe it was just my expectations that were off - I expected a book with a more detailed and scientific reasoning behind the sources Hari talks about and I got a very general overview and a personal narrative, but this wasn’t my favourite read of the year.
I still do recommend it if you want an introduction into the more sociological and psychological perspective on depression and anxiety - but if you’re already more literate on this topic, this one will bring nothing new for you.

4.7/5 Great insight on depression and lonelyness, as well as how the modern world influences well being.
I wanted to read about lonelyness because well, I felt so. But found much more, facinating research and interviews, and just good, fresh writing.
