Great read. Much more radical than I anticipated which is excellent. Will definitely be thinking about this one and recommending it.

If you are a person who has struggled with depression or anxiety, I highly recommend this book. He discusses how those have 3 causes: biological, psychological, and social. We know how to address the biological, with medicine. Yet, there is hardly any discussion of how to address some of the social causes that he discusses in this book. Many of which I would have never thought about. Those are the things that we can take ownership of and look to make changes to ourselves. Also as a science nerd, I really appreciated how much real research is cited in this book.

I know with my personal experience though, medication is what worked for me and allowed to me to have the energy to put forth the work in the areas he discusses here. He kind of throws medication under the bus a bit. It’s not for everyone, but it is worth a discussion with your doctor.

Highly recommend this to everyone.

Didn’t really know what to expect from this book when buying it. It turned out to be an amazing read. I am a big fan of the writing style. The author mainly uses interviews and research throughout the book and tied it together with some anecdotes. This makes the book feel like a story despite it being quite factual in nature.

This book looks at several different causes of depression & anxiety and even proposes some solutions. The author challenges some common misconceptions about depression and some more lesser known treatment methods which are not supported as much as it is difficult to profit from them.

Some of the solutions proposed by the author were often quite left-leaning. Therefore I found it difficult to differentiate if this was the author trying to advocate his political beliefs or if they just ended up being left-leaning by chance. Either way I found the solutions quite interesting and I was grateful that the author even attempted to come up with solutions as I find people often like to complain but don’t come up with any ideas themselves.

I would recommend this to anyone as mental illness really does affect us all in the end.

I just inhaled this book and it leaves you with a lot to process in a good way. Soooo informative I love that so many studies were included and it does a wonderful job of breaking down the stigma around depression and anxiety and confirming how this is a normal reaction to big trauma and everyday trauma and how the root of depression is your emotion about what you’ve experienced. Also emphasizes the idea that the “cure” for depression/anxiety is not a one size fits all pill but a much more personal and more challenging experience. People who aren’t ready to hear that will not like this book, but I definitely recommend!!!!

This book was so well done. The author is so knowledgeable and is excellent at communicating that knowledge to the reader. As someone who has never struggled with depression, I was really excited to learn more and this book went above and beyond.
“it is only when we listen to our pain that we can follow it back to its source – and only there, when we can see its true causes, can we begin to overcome it.”

I quite like it
