Like I really get the intention here. Yes life experiences and past trauma causes people to suffer from depression but I think this book totally underestimates the importance of neurotransmitters in causing depression as well. It seems to present the idea that people look past the influence of peoples past on their depression which just doesn’t feel true. Find me one psychiatrist that doesn’t think childhood trauma can lead to depression.

There were definitely some good parts of this book (the solutions section) but I feel like this was a little too much of a hippie dippy anti-pharma (don’t get me wrong they’re partially at fault) narrative. Re connecting people to their futures or others will not stop someone from being depressed though it might work in combination with other therapies.

My opinions on the ideas in the book are confusing but I can certainly say it was an easy and not heavily scientific read for all those interested.
informative fast-paced

Probably one of the best books I've read and definitely one of the most important. Everyone should read this even if they have never experienced depression. It can help everyone.

Gave me hope when nothing else could. I recommend it to anyone who is struggling.

This is a fascinating read. I highly suggest it for anyone who is struggling or knows someone struggling with depression or anxiety and in general, it's a different take on the problems that contribute to the increase in depression and anxiety in our society today. Very well researched, as well as enjoyable to read. Johann Hari has a great way of telling stories to illustrate the nine causes he outlines.

I thought this was super interesting. I didn’t agree with everything he said, but a lot of it made sense.

It's such an important book.

Should be mandatory reading

im very interested in psychology related topics and so this book seemed interesting to me as well. i loved the information and the message johann hari was trying to pass, but i just hated the style of the book (which doesnt make it a bad book, i just didnt necessarily like it). its full of anecdotes and people's stories, which yes are interesting, but it made this book hard for me to read. it took me about 2 months to actually finish it. but the message is very interesting and there are surely a lot of things that im going to remember and try to focus on.
