Taught this to my Year 10s. Magnificent text. Just richly beautiful and intimate. A plain reading keeps you more connected to the bamboo leaves peeping into your bedroom as you read it. Also hopeful for romance. It’s intricate and contained. Contained novels are the best.

“He moved his body away from hers. Then he spoke in a manly, composed tone of voice: “Today on the beach I found a pretty shell and brought it for you.”

A short retro novel with good descriptive scenes and very plain plot. Reads in an hour if you're invested. It isn't a masterpiece (by far) - maybe it's just too outdated for a picky reader from 2022, but worth a try.

Though it is one of the weaker novels that Mishima has written, it still holds up nicely.

Short and sweet.

Mishima’s description of rural, fishing village island life is so eloquent and vivid that it transports you to Uta-Jima.

It’s a young coming of age story centred on a forbidden romance where ultimately hard work, honour and love triumph over complacency, wealth and power.

Perfect for some short, light hearted, happily ever after reading.
