Really good characters but I found the format a little redundant (minute, character, minute, character) for more than half the book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, despite the sad story that it revolves around.. It begins with the death of a prostitute, and I loved reading her memories as they flooded her dying brain during the last ten minutes of life. This is not a book I would ordinarily choose but it was a gift for my local book club secret Santa, and I am glad I received it! The language is beautiful and flows easily, the chapters are short and manageable, and while it portrays very deep, dark emotions and the ups and downs of human nature, it was a delight to read.

A wonderful story of Tequila Leila’s life and her found family. Leila’s heartbreaking journey made the relationships she builds so much more meaningful. Despite the hardships she’s overcome, Leila stays positive and made such an impact on so many lives, which feels really inspiring. The historical events sprinkled in the story made it feel more realistic.

A book of two halves. The interesting concept that we retain a level of consciousness for a brief time after death, switches to a tale of loyalty and friendship. Booker shortlist 2019.

The language was overwhelmingly flowery for my tastes, but the characters were so lovable that I didn’t truly mind. Part I was better than Part II, but the narrative as a whole was structured beautifully.
