Pretty bog standard GWOT memoir. Could have used a few more points of reference than football teams (look, I love football more than most people but spice it up a bit) but it was otherwise well written, clear, and readable. Book keeps it's short length by more or less only focusing on the notable action elements/missions. Doesn't leave a ton of room for retrospection outside a few sentences here or there but if that's not what you're looking for it's great for sniper action and The Hole is one of the most unique war stories I think I've read though.

But, yeah, it's not bringing up something particularly new or groundbreaking to the GWOT/Soldier memoir field but it's not really bad in any way either.

This was quite the harrowing account of one sniper's most dangerous deployment in the Middle East.

I was on the edge of my seat most of the time reading this, often full of patriotic rallying, and at times with understandable disillusionment, frustration, and grief, as the political complications intensify.

Not merely a simple recalling of facts and numbers, but a detailed story with heart stopping combat action. All the more impressive and impactful knowing it's true.

I don't read books very much. Last one I read was Kill Bin Laden by Dalton Fury in 2011. My wife bought this for me cause she knew I wanted to read it. Read it over the course of about 10 hours. Loved every word. Fantastic book!

Autobiographical account of Army Ranger Nick Irving, mainly covering his deployment to Afghanistan as a sniper. Straightforward description of events, including a bit of reminiscing about his growing up years, but mostly about his rather action packed deployment.

This book was so awesome and great!!! Action-packed and such a page-turner! It was way better than I was expecting when I started this book. Usually I don't get too excited about military books but this one completely changed my mind after reading it! Very well-written and the author makes you feel like you're there with him sniping bad guys and getting shot at by the enemy. I highly recommend this book!

It's hard for me to imagine anyone I have less in common with than Mr. Irving, that's probably why I picked up this book after all I do not read to have my own experience of the world reflected back at me but to see the world through someone else's eyes for a moment.
It really was interesting to read what the author thought and felt while in the middle of a war zone but also to realize all the things he did not think about, it was very humanizing.
