This was SO great, but the romance categorization is misleading. It reminds me of In Five Years and One Day in December. Romance + sadness

I felt frustrated for 90% of the book since I was reading a lot of words, but nothing was actually happening. I just didn’t connect with these characters or their story. I get that I was supposed to feel something, but ultimately I just didn’t care enough. There was a lot of miscommunication, a lot of eluding to something, but never actually progressing anywhere, a lot of back and forth and then a whole lot dumped in at the last minute, leaving me feeling like I missed something. The romance was not a romance. It was a meet cute, a string of incomplete run ins and incomplete sentences and then an ending that felt like it was trying really hard.

Max & Josie | Strangers to Lovers | M/F | UNHAPPY ENDING
What an unnecessarily sad ending. This book was going to be 5* until we got to about 70% of the way through it when the miscommunication trope started.
I HATE the miscommunication trope bc it shows that the couples can’t communicate, and if the couple can’t communicate, I no longer think they should be together. Then OUT OF NOWHERE, he dies. So those last precious months of his life that they could have spent in love and happy, they spent completely separately all because of a huge misunderstanding?!?!? What a dreadful concept.
Also there was so much suffering for the main character…like why? Both her parent die, then her Boyfriend dies, her other boyfriend cheats on her and she loses her job??? Wtf??? Why?? What was the reason for so much suffering for one person.
Anyway, I wish I never read it and it’s left me feeling deeply sad.

God give me patience.
I would say 50% of the book is misunderstandings and ow drama.
He literally dies. 90% in to the book and he dies. We were building up to a huge secret from his past and right before he can tell her, he drops dead of a brain aneurysm at the hospital where her grandma is getting triple bypass surgery. Wtf
A “romance” with no HEA doesn’t deserve the romance title. I just feel like a HEA should be a necessary requirement for books labeled romance. Would you be able to make lemonade without
