This was a super compelling read but the ending disappointed.

The book was well written the only reason I'm rating it this low is because of the synopsis. It makes you feel like you're getting a thriller but this was more of a psychological horror. The open ended ending didn't bother me but because of the way it was set up I was led to believe that the book was going one way when in fact it was something else entirely

I really enjoyed the subtlety of this book. I'm sure a lot of the themes went over my head because of that subtlety (I'm not really a hint taker) but the horribleness of the MC really creeps up on you. At first you think this poor man was in a really bad accident and obviously something is wrong with him (what with his ableist thoughts, lack of sadness and this undertone of how important he thinks he is), but you don't know how bad of a person he is until much later in the story.
I wouldn't really call this horror as you definitely won't be sleeping with the lights on for nights to come, but it is a little disturbing.
The ending makes me think (hope) that maybe his wife got away from him and both she and the mother in law can now go off and live a happy life.
The most obvious commentary is about the ableism and sexism, but there is also some focus on loneliness, trauma and grief.
