I’m not a huge fantasy reader but I loved Havenfall! It was a quick read with well developed characters. The world building was really well done-I liked the guide in the beginning plus the magic system and realms were slowly uncovered instead of info dumped at once like I’ve seen in other books.

It did take a little while to get into the book but once I did it was hard to put down! The plot twists kept me guessing and kept turning the story on its head. I never knew what to expect (with the exception of one twist)! Also, the cover is stunning 😍

I’m excited to check out book 2 and hope the romance/love triangle is a little more developed.

I wasn’t really thrilled with this book. Not much intrigued me about the book besides the basic premise. Any of the “plot-twists” that were coming could be seen from a mile away, and everything was way too over-explained to be enjoyable. It was enough to push me through to the end, but not enough to rate it any higher than this.

YA protagonists often get criticised for being stupid, but Maddie is by far the dumbest protagonist I’ve ever read, this book would be 200 pages shorter if she had even on ounce of intelligence.
The last ~50 pages made this some what redeeming.

My biggest problem with this book is the native erasure. The inn that Maddies (I’m assuming white)family is in charge of is in the mountains of Colorado… and they’ve been there since like the beginning of time… yeah not adding up, unless Maddie has some unmentioned native ancestors (but then everyone from fiordenkill and byrn are white?). This is one of the things that was frustrating about the book, in addition to maddies character at times. Not frustrating in a way where you’re invested in the story that much, but just frustrating because it’s slightly annoying. The dialogue between taya and Maddie felt kind of forced at times, and I feel like I wanted their romance to be developed just a little bit more? Idk I feel like there’s a way to make the romance second priority and also develop it well.
Overall though, I enjoyed the atmosphere of it and the plot was better than some other books I’ve read, but the foreshadowing was sloppy at times.

I really loved the premise of this book: a secret inn hidden away that acts as a gateway to different worlds? A murder mystery with the politics of other worlds involved? A bisexual MC? I really wanted to love this book (and the cover had nothing to do with it at all…).

But what follows is a whole lot of hand-wringing and a lot of repetitive dialogue. Unfortunately, Maddie the main character, really started to frustrate me, and while I realise she has been thrust into a position of power during a delicate situation but I really wanted to shake her sometimes to grow a spine!

The final plot twist was a goodie (but admittedly there were some very obvious red herrings…) but this just felt like a fairly generic YA fantasy that could’ve been ground-breaking, but just…wasn’t…
