I’m not a huge fantasy reader but I loved Havenfall! It was a quick read with well developed characters. The world building was really well done-I liked the guide in the beginning plus the magic system and realms were slowly uncovered instead of info dumped at once like I’ve seen in other books.

It did take a little while to get into the book but once I did it was hard to put down! The plot twists kept me guessing and kept turning the story on its head. I never knew what to expect (with the exception of one twist)! Also, the cover is stunning 😍

I’m excited to check out book 2 and hope the romance/love triangle is a little more developed.

characters were frustrating at times with their ignorance or denial or lack of development. plot was original and not too predictable. too many loose ends, not too much resolution but i do not regret this read.

My biggest problem with this book is the native erasure. The inn that Maddies (I’m assuming white)family is in charge of is in the mountains of Colorado… and they’ve been there since like the beginning of time… yeah not adding up, unless Maddie has some unmentioned native ancestors (but then everyone from fiordenkill and byrn are white?). This is one of the things that was frustrating about the book, in addition to maddies character at times. Not frustrating in a way where you’re invested in the story that much, but just frustrating because it’s slightly annoying. The dialogue between taya and Maddie felt kind of forced at times, and I feel like I wanted their romance to be developed just a little bit more? Idk I feel like there’s a way to make the romance second priority and also develop it well.
Overall though, I enjoyed the atmosphere of it and the plot was better than some other books I’ve read, but the foreshadowing was sloppy at times.

3.75

I found this book to be fast paced for it's size and covers a lot of story in 320 pages.
There was some interesting characters and relationships which I forgot about before reading it again. I felt like I also enjoyed it more this time around at 3.75 instead of the 3.5 (so much of a difference I know), where I think I could appreciate what was resolved in the first book and what still needs to be resolved in the second.
The ending also leaves this open to have a couple of different scenes and potential scenarios, which I'm interested to see if they do happen or not.

I think my favourite characters are Taya and the Silver Prince, and probably for almost opposite reasons. Taya feels like a very rounded character and the more Maddie interacted with her the more I wanted to read and get to know her, as this is a shorter book and there is a lot happening, she isn't in it as much as I would like and doesn't have a huge amount of character development because of that.
I'm not sure how much I'll get to see her in the sequel considering she is now in another world and it looks like the door sealed behind her.
The Silver Prince on the other hand is very 2D in my opinion but I kind of liked that. We don't know anything about him other then he created the Oasis city in his world. Instead you are given "Charismatic Leader that seems to know more than letting on" which is just fun. Sometimes it is just fun to have characters that you don't have to overthink and you get what you are given.

This to me is very much a fun weekend read where you can sit down and read it in a day or two which is what I more or less this time around.
