A light read that was perfect for helping me unwind from school for the holidays. Feel good situation comedy with likable characters that leave you feeling warm inside. Better than the first book but still simplistic plot. Was not expecting anything more though.
Will be continuing the series.

What worked: Holly Smale, you are a magician! After having a blast reading Geek Girl, I waited and waited for what felt like an eternity but in actual fact was only a year for the sequel, Model Misfit. Now to wait for the third book, why do I do this to myself?
Anyway, we meet back up with Harriet Manners and the poor girl hasn't gotten any more socially acceptable since we last saw her. She's still struggling along and trying her hardest to be her own person when everything stacks up against her. But instead of staying on home turf, Harriet leaves behind the drama that follows her around and her pregnant stepmother and hops on a plane to Japan! Holly captured the hustle and bustle of the city with the tranquil rural areas of Japan so well and duuuuuuude I need to buy a one way ticket ASAP. All of those bright lights and weird and wonderful inventions, the old traditions and the gorgeously sculpted mountains had me drooling.
I know what you may be thinking (and if you're not, you soon will be), there's no way that Toby can stowaway in Harriet's suitcase and you're right. I missed my favourite little stalker but we do have an eccentric substitute in Rin whose rudimentary grasp of English almost killed me. I'm sure there are a few sayings I'll be Rin-ifying for good measure and if I ever had a kitten, she would definitely be getting named Kylie Minogue.
However, it's not all fun and games. There are some very poignant moments where I really related to Harriet. It seems like she can never do anything right and with her new half-sibling on the way, she has to contend with her own doubt that her dad and Annabel won't love her anymore. Dealing with that is tough enough without being thousands of miles from home
Tons of Wilbur-isms, clumsy antics, belly laughs by the dozen and a protagonist you want to care for like a baby baby bird, it's fair to say that Geek Girl: Model Misfit is a sequel to be reckoned with!
What irked: Hahahaha oh that is a good joke. Nothing at all irked me about Geek Girl: Model Misfit.

**SPOILER POSSIBLE FOR BOOK 1 IN THE SERIES**
Guys, I really enjoyed Geek Girl, the first book in this series, with its quirky characters and America's Next Top Model feel to it, so of course I was excited to pick up the sequel!
And guys, I loved reconnecting with all these characters! They are exactly as I remembered: the adorable, naive and somewhat clueless Harriet with all her amazing facts; her dad who can't calm down and be a true adult; her stepmother Annabel who is the voice of reason in their family; Nat, who is a true friend even from halfway across the world; Wilbur, who keeps making me laugh with all his crazy petnames and antics and of course Nick, who is just such a teenage guy!
Holly Smale also introduces us to a new set of character, one of which I totally adored: Rin, a Japanese model who not-so-secretly wishes to be Australian instead. That girl was amazing!
So Harriet goes to Japan. If you've read Geek Girl, you can imagine exactly how much havoc Harriet can reap there. I mean, the possibilities are infinite. And she does and it was hilarious! I was feeling kinda bad for her for some of them, but still, it was funny!
Harriet is brokenhearted because Nick dumped her and I really felt for her because she was trying to cope with this, but really had no idea how to handle it. And I liked that, because really, how unlikely is it for a 15-year-old girl to know how to handle facing their ex-boyfriend after breaking up? I mean, I didn't. None of my friends did. Obviously we all pretended we did, but nobody had a clue.
I think that in the romantic side of the book lies the only thing that I didn't really like:
**SPOILER, LIGHT UP TO READ**I was like SERIOUSLY? All of this drama because she had misheard him and he for some reason never bothered to explain again? I mean, SERIOUSLY? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? So much of the conflict in this book comes from their break-up and then it's just swept away like POOF? SERIOUSLY??**END OF SPOILER/RANT**
If even 10% of what happens in this novel, happens in the modelling world (and it probably does if you can believe ANTM), then it's truly crazy and I love it. Or rather, I love reading about it and seeing it! Wilbur has a special place in my heart, as do Harriet and Rin!
My rating: 4 stars
Made me crave: potato croquettes (this sounds wrong, but Google translate tells me this is the right word...)

I really really enjoyed this a lot more than the first. I don't know what it was but for some reason this was just so much more fun and interesting to read.
I love this series so much, I have never laughed so hard at a book in my life. Yes including the first Geek Girl.
Harriet is such an easy character to relate to, which is really ironic considering her one in a million model career. And Nick, I do not even now to convey my love of Nick into words, he is simply Nick. The new characters are also amazing as expected and I now really want to go to Tokyo :D.
I did not this put book down other then when I had tea and read it in a matter of hours. I recommend it to everyone.

I'm unable to pinpoint what exactly this series is lacking. 3.5 stars
Sometimes you just need to shut off and have a silly, lighthearted read. And this was just that. I want to be friends with Harriet manners!!
