Unlike a lot of other people, I actually really enjoyed the fourth book in the series. It had just enough both revamped and old school charm to make me believe that this series had the potential to have a second equally amazing trilogy. But sitting here after reading this book to relive the glory days of this series, and all the whimsicality and adorable characters it has to offer, I can't help to feel disappointed. I was promised creepiness, whimsicality, humour, a scary villain all wrapped up into an amazing fleshed-out action novel. Well, I can tell you one thing; this ain't it chief.

First and foremost I have my biggest issue which I can't even discuss without #spoilers but the romance in this book makes me physically GAG. If you have read this book (or if you've read the fourth, yes I'm afraid those darkest dreams do unfortunately come true) you know exactly what I'm talking about. It is so dirty and I'm so extraordinarily mad. NO ONE WANTED THIS MR. RIGGS. WHY DID YOU DO THIS? WHEN YOU SAID REVAMP THIS WAS NOT WHAT WE ENVISIONED.

This book's overall creepiness, villains, and just everything to be honest, is just so flat compared to the original trilogy. It tried not to have simply one plot, but write two sub-plots instead, and frankly quite messily. It could barely withstand the first one, there was no need for a second one. Where we left off on the fourth book, there was SO much going for it and so much potential. I can't help but feel like that potential got SEVERELY misdirected, and lead to this mess of a book. So much happened, yet it felt like nothing happened. It suffered from a real filler-book syndrome feel and I'm not vibing with it

To be honest, if this was ANY other series I could've easily given it 1-2 stars. But I have so much undying hope for one of my favourite childhood series that I'm severely biased. I'm sad :(

Bottom line: if you are reading this after reading the 1,2 or 3rd book: DO NOT READ BOOKS 4 AND 5. You will love book 4 and feel the need to read book 5. Book 3 has enough-ish completion to feel somewhat satisfied and not deal with this book of disappointment. If you're reading this review after book 4, well, good luck charlie!

I definitely enjoyed the continuation of the story, but wish the storyline went slightly different at the beginning of this book. It too quickly became a team effort and I thought this book had been set up for some good character development for Jacob if the beginning of this book had gone a little differently. My other complaint is how quickly Jacob rebounds and is thrust into a new love interest. I think there was great potential for slowly building the relationship and having it go from a friendship to a romantic relationship instead of diving straight into it.

Too many plot lines. It ran really slow, and the impulsivity got old.

This book was a bit all over the place and random - definitely suffering from middle book/prolonged series syndrome. I still enjoyed it at its core and the new peculiarities we saw, but it wasn't the best IMO. I'm definitely keeping on now just so I can reach the end. I hope the last book brings a little life back into the series.

This one was a bit... slow for me. Feels like some of the stuff is almost a repeat of what happened in previous books.

After the previous book I was hesitant, that book felt very ..desperate and unnecessary. So this book was a breath of fresh air this series desperatly needed at this point. I enjoyed where it took the characters in their personal developments and relationships.
