3.5

Okay so I enjoyed this book however, there's something quite annoying about it. It feels like a filler book. Like a random love triangle, character development but little in the way of plot. Still, I always get an undeniable sense of nostalgia when reading these books and the photographs really add to the characterisation.

It builds up to the next book amazingly. So desolations of Devils Acre had better payoff!!

4.75/5

This book was REALLY good, but it went in an entire different direction than I expected it to, coming off of A Map of Days.

I really liked Jacob and Noor. It was a relationship I glimpsed in the previous book and was glad to see again. I missed having Emma as a more prominent character, but I liked that Ransom Riggs didn’t make her a jealous ex and instead had her and Jacob have a mature conversation about their differences.

I didn’t like that Caul is back. Reusing villains in continuation series is a pet peeve of mine. If the previous book had seemed more like the fifth book, rather than a new series about the same characters, I think I would have liked it more.

Overall, I’m excited for the next book! I could get lost in this world indefinitely. If Ransom Riggs keeps writing them, I’m likely to keep reading them.

Assuming anyone who read the previous books is reading this book review, another fun/good installment in the Peculiar Children series. The urgency of the threats still felt threatening. I think the way the children fight is starting to feel old.
For example, the way Jacob’s power seems very inconsistent sometimes it doesn’t work, sometimes it does but only if it’s absolutely needed.

It does seem like the end is setting up for the next though and I’m probably going to read it.
