I already liked Americanah. This novel gives an invaluable window into the civil war that surrounded the birth and fall of Biafra, with a very interesting exploration of the very different lives of various characters. Olanna, Odenigbo, Ugwu, Kainene, Richard, Madu, Baby…are unforgettable characters.
Recommend.

3.5 stars.

Certainly an expansive novel, Half of a Yellow Sun focuses on a set of twins and their lovers and friends during the struggle for Biafran independence from 1967-1970. It tells of heartbreaking poverty and endemic violence amidst the waxing and waning of hope. Its a long book, and I wished for a stronger through line at certain points.

a portrayal of the atrocities of war (shaped by the legacy of British colonialism) and the history of Biafra through the perspectives of several characters whose lives/stories entwine. may we always remember, and may the world not remain silent.

i really like the author’s writing style and it was refreshing to read historical fiction on something i didn’t know a lot about. the characters were also really well developed and complex.

was liking but it was for a bookclub and i didnt read in time and don't care to finish

Brilliant and insightful history of the Biafran War, told with great detail about the horrific violence and desperate starvation faced during this often-overlooked conflict.

The characters felt occasionally rather two-dimensional, however, and in many cases simply stood in as plot devices, or as figures to explain a certain facet of the society of the time.
