devastating. characters are so well fleshed out, you really feel like you are living through the Nigerian war with them. the fear, tension, uncertainty mixed with grief, sorrow, and periods of hope… you can really sense when things are turning for the worse and you are constantly stressed out and hopeful that the characters will make it out okay. cried a LOT at the end.

This book would’ve been stronger if it had cut down on the soapy elements and focused more on the political aspects, which is where it truly shined. That said, perhaps the author’s choice to lean into familiar fictional tropes played a role in its success, making it more accessible to a broader audience, especially those unfamiliar or hesitant to read about such topics.

The shift from the late ’60s back to the early ’60s to explain the sisters’ falling out was the book’s weakest point -drawn out, melodramatic, and predictable.

Personally, I would’ve preferred if the story had been told from the perspectives of Onigbe and Kainene rather than Olanna and Richard.

Devastating. This is an epic novel about the Nigerian civil war of the 1960s. The film adaptation is great (and stars wonderful Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandiwe Newton, and John Boyega). Bah, short review here - I didn't enjoy this as much as Americanah (which I LOOOOOVED) - partly because the topic is so grim indeed. But it was very good.
