This novel is set during the Nigerian Civil War and contains explicit details of the horror and devastation caused by war. I listened to the audiobook but found it difficult to listen to at times, due to the subject matter. The author’s use of language, to set the tone and mood, was excellent. Whilst I could not enjoy this novel, due to the subject matter, I appreciate its importance and I was very moved by it.

it took me a while but once i got to the final pages i realised that i really enjoyed this book. although i found myself hating the characters i liked for things they had done, i still felt sympathy for them in the complex and harrowing situation they were in. i’m glad i saw it through to the end!
