i was expecting something completely different but i didnt hate it
I... hmmm, wow. Yikes. I love Arthurian legend. It has always held a place deep in my heart, this however, was a poorly written, unimaginative, “retelling” of the one true king. There are a bunch of flat characters that you’re supposed to care about because of who they are according to stories you know, but absolutely no character development to help foster a love of these characters. It ends on a cliffhanger and I honestly don’t care. It reads like a TV show script and allows for zero imagination.

I'll admit, I was excited for this book. I love the story of King Arthur and I was hyped to see another retelling, and with art in the book no less!! But I was really disappointed with how this book turned out.
The book is told through different perspectives, but it suddenly switches during chapters with no breaks. And then different chapters are told through different perspectives but they aren't labeled so you have no idea who these people are. And then on top of that, they aren't interesting.
I'll say this once and I feel super bad, but the art style is... weird? And sometimes ugly. When the artist does one person's drawings, like headshots, it looks decent. But the main character, the way she's drawn, looks like a black woman and I was so excited because that would just give this story so many layers but nope. She's white. So that was... weird. Comment me if you felt the same way or if that's just the way the artist draws because it was just odd.
And I hate to say this but I literally didn't care about the characters at all. The author does a really good job in describing scenery to you, but getting you to give a shit about the characters?? Not so much.
And the way that Merlin was written was just off-putting. Like, he's a habitual drunk and sometimes it seems like he's faking but then other times it's real and this book was just confusing for me.
I would like to say more than like, one good thing about this book but alas. Huge disappointment. Glad I didn't buy it though!! I checked it out from the library. If you enjoyed this book then I'm glad! It just didn't click with me.

Hard no.
Reads like a bad TV show script, which it was probably adapted from. It feels the author only researched soap in times of King Arthur, and who are the persons in the King Arthur legend and how are they related.
The story & characters are 08/15 YA, and it feels like it was just released to make some quick money before the netflix series starts.
Do I even need to say anything more?

A solid book but not a faithful arthuriana adaptation. Though I'm excited for any possible sequel.

I was just so bored and uninvested. This book seems promising as a gender-bent retelling of King Arthur, but it felt more like the names were used and then we were just given a different story. And I'd say it's debatable to say it's a gender-bent retelling.. as the story seemed to be coming more and more from Arthur still, and even though Nimue was chosen by the sword, seems to not be as active as a character. We get POVs from her, but they're lacking personality of anything that really would draw me into a story.
Right from the story, we're thrown into the action, which could be great but it just got confusing because the writing was really choppy. I felt like more characters kept getting thrown at me before I could really grasp who our first characters were. I trudged through because I was appealed to the premise still, but 150 pages in, I still felt nothing for the story or characters.
While reading this, I can see how it'd be a fun Netflix show, and I still plan on checking that out, but this book just wasn't for me.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada for sending me a copy for an honest review!

I received a copy of this book from netgalley for an honest review.
This book was ok. I was really intrigued are the beginning, especially with Nimue’s parts and I loved the aspect of the Hidden. Unfortunately as the book went on I lost interest. There were several different storylines and the only one I was really interested in was Nimue’s.
I requested this book from netgalley because it is slated to be a Netflix show next year and I thought it would be fun to have read the book before the show came out. It seemed like it was a book written about a show (almost like a script) instead of a book having a show based on it (if that makes sense). I think it will make a better show than a book.
Like I said before, I liked the aspect of the Hidden and it seemed so prominent at the beginning of the book, but it basically stopped being talked about and I forgot it was even a part of the book until it popped back up near the end.
I’m not 100% familiar with the story of Arthur, but I feel like this book wasn’t really a retelling. I recognized the names from the original story, but it seemed like it didn’t follow the original story at all.
Overall it was good enough for me to read the whole thing although it took me probably an hour to read the last 5% just because I wasn’t interested enough to sit down and read it. I think the show will end up being good, so I can’t wait to watch it!

This book was disappointing. Do I think you should read it? Meh, it had some good moments. Do I think it should be a tv show? No. There were too many plot points that never got fully realized and then just disappeared. The whole “cursed” thing never got explained, it’s like the author just forgot about that part of the TITLE of the book. The ending was unfulfilling (although, I’m sure there will be a second book, not that I think this author is capable of that) and if there is a second book why couldn’t it end on a cliffhanger? I just read the Three Dark Crowns series and those all ended on cliffhangers making me want to read the next book. We all love a female heroine but, like, wouldn’t it be so much more believable if one woman was involved in writing this? Does the author even know any women? Also did Frank Miller even read the book? Nimue is wearing a dress for the first third of the book but he never *draws* her wearing a dress. Nimue and Arthur are supposed to be in their late teens but he draws them like they’re 28 year old adults.
